Scarlett Johansson’s Adorable Pet Family: Dogs, Reptiles & Her Furry Companions

Scarlett Johansson is known for her stellar acting career, but many fans don’t know about her deep love for animals. Over the years, she has adopted and cared for a variety of pets  from tiny rescued dogs to reptiles she grew up with. Here’s a look at Scarlett Johansson’s pet family, their stories, and how they reflect her compassionate personality.

1. Scarlett’s Canine Companions

Maggie, the Chihuahua

  • Scarlett adopted her first dog, Maggie, a Chihuahua, in 2005.
  • She has joked that Maggie “looks a bit like ham” and even “smells like ham.”
  • Despite her success in Hollywood, Scarlett has said she likes to keep Maggie “humble,” and doesn’t overly pamper her.

Pancake, the Dachshund Chihuahua Mix

  • Pancake is another rescue dog in Scarlett’s life. She adopted Pancake in 2014.
  • As a small but spirited companion, Pancake complements Maggie in her pet family.

Baxter, the Golden Retriever

  • Baxter is a big, gentle Golden Retriever. Scarlett adopted him in 2008 while she was married to Ryan Reynolds.
  • After their separation, Baxter lives full time with Reynolds.
  • Scarlett has shared fond memories of Baxter, showing her affection and that she values all her animal friends.

2. A Feline Friend: Trooper the Cat

  • In interviews, Scarlett has spoken about a cat named Trooper.
  • In an Index Magazine interview, she described how comforting the cat’s presence is, especially when she returns home after long shoots:

“…this fluffy, warm thing purring and rubbing your leg.”

  • She also mentioned how she didn’t want to miss his growing up years, so she brought him along when she traveled for work.

3. Early Love for Reptiles

  • Scarlett’s first pets were reptiles, because her mother was allergic to fur.
  • As a child, she kept geckos, a leopard gecko, lizards, turtles, frogs, and toads.
  • In a 2012 interview for We Bought a Zoo, she described how her initial fascination with reptiles carried over into her film work:

I had lizards, a gecko, turtles, frogs and toads … my mom was allergic to fur.

4. Her Fears  Not All Animals Are Her Friends

  • Interestingly, despite being an animal lover, Scarlett has admitted she’s terrified of birds.
  • She shared that peacocks on the set of We Bought a Zoo made her uncomfortable, thanks to their wings and beaks.
  • She’s also said she dislikes cockroaches.

5. What Her Pets Mean to Her

Scarlett Johansson’s pets are more than just animals; they offer companionship, emotional support, and grounding in her busy life. Whether it’s her little Chihuahua Maggie, her mixed breed Pancake, or her purring cat Trooper, these pets reflect her nurturing side.

Her childhood reptiles show a unique and early bond with nature, and even today, she cherishes the memory of them. At the same time, her fear of birds reminds us that being an animal lover doesn’t mean loving all animals equally.
